HARG Seminar series

The Healthy Ageing Research Group (HARG) are delighted to share with you our new Seminar Series focusing on LGBTQI+ and Ageing. The Seminar Series follows on from previous seminars delivered on Social Care, and Physical Activity respectively.  We have an exciting line of guest speakers who will be sharing with us their research interests on LGBTQI+ and Ageing. All seminars will be held across every Wednesday from 12-1pm in February.

The Seminar Series will explore:

Wednesday 7th February 2024 – Chris Breen : Inclusion within LBGTQI+ (Online)

Overview: It is estimated that between 1-2% of the population have one of the many Intersex condition, In this seminar we will look at what it is, how it is diagnosed, healthy inequalities, comorbidities, Physical, social and Psychological effects. Also the relationship between Intersex conditions and Disorders of Sexual Development (DSDs) and why its included within LGBTQI+  and its potential effects on Gender Identity.

Presenter: Chris is a Senior Lecturer in the College of Health and Science Chris started a Nursing career in 1993 and is a Registered Nurse (Adult), initially working in emergency medical admissions and accident and emergency. After becoming a Paramedic in 2007 worked both as a front line clinician and as a clinical tutor with the ambulance service Since 2012 Chris has worked as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, becoming a band 8a Senior ACP in 2019. Working predominantly in urgent care settings , a generalist with an interest in Emergency care, Minor Illness and Minor Injury management. Prior to working with the University, was employed as a clinical educator.

Wednesday 14th February 2024 – Dr Michael Toze (He/ Him) Non-linear ageing, queer time, and inter-generational connections (Online)

Overview: Recent scholarship on ageing in trans communities has explored how transition might contribute to different ways of thinking about time, ageing and the lifecourse: for example noting the different ways in which trans communities may mark age, or the implications of a second puberty later in life. This seminar will explore some of these discussions, and expand them into thinking about what these different concepts of ageing and lifecourse might mean for thinking about generations and inter-generational connections.

Presenter: Michael is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health and Social Determinants of Health at the Lincoln Medical School, University of Lincoln. Michael previously worked in local government policy and performance management before commencing a PhD in LGBT+ ageing. He has research interests in a range of topics related to health inequalities and LGBT health and ageing, with a special interest in trans health. He is potentially able to supervise PhD students on topics related to LGBT or trans health - please contact directly to discuss.

Wednesday 21st February 2024 – Professor Paul Willis (He/ Him) Making visible LGBTQ+ lives, personal histories and relationships in the delivery of social care support to older people. (Online)

Overview: This presentation will identify issues of social inclusion of older LGBTQ+ people in care arrangements and care provision in later life. Based on messages from UK -based research, issues of exclusion and marginalisation will be discussed alongside opportunities for developing more inclusive social care practice and service delivery. 

Presenter: Paul is Professor of Adult Social Care, a registered social worker, and the inaugural Director of CARE - the Centre for Adult Social Care Research, based in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. His research background is in social gerontology and social work, and his research focuses on issues of social inclusion and care in later life, particularly for older people belonging to minoritised groups with care and support needs. This includes older LGBTQ+ people.

Wednesday 28th February 2024 – Miss Chelsea Murphy (She/ Her) LGBTQ+ Health in Lincolnshire - Building a Community of Practice  (Face-to-face workshop - Room TBC)

Overview: This workshop session invites colleagues across Lincolnshire to collaborate and explore ideas for future working around LGBTQ+ health and ageing. Chelsea is a researcher and Lecturer of Public Health at the University of Lincoln. Her research history includes undertaking participatory action research with LGBTQ+ communities across Greater Manchester, exploring health and wellbeing, drug and alcohol use, and relationships and sex education. This workshop will be of interest to those with an interest in LGBTQ+ inequalities, service provision, policy, or healthcare practice. Please bring your ideas and interests to this session, previous experience working with LGBTQ+ communities is not mandatory.
