Measuring what matters

The It's All About People team is working to explore what ‘productivity’ really means in human terms, with a focus on outcomes, not just outputs

Measuring What Matters aims to raise the profile and importance of people’s experiences and qualitative data in quality improvement, long term planning and decision-making across health and social care in Lincolnshire.

We’re asking the questions that count:

  • What difference are services and interventions making in people's lives?
  • How do we know what impacts our actions and interventions are having?
  • How are those impacts shaping the wider health and care system?

The project is developing innovative ways to gather and use qualitative intelligence to help health and social care providers answer these questions.

Measuring What Matters is a partnership project that explores what it means for services and activities to be genuinely cost-effective, in both human and financial terms. It has three stages:

1. Gathering people's stories and experiences

2. Making sense of the information in the stories

3. Making use of the insights and learning to effect change

It involves:

  • Story gathering using different methods: Community Reporting, Our Shared Agreement Community Listening and the People's Stories Template
  • Testing ways to measure the return on investment of personal outcomes that are often hard to place a financial value on - using Social Value
  • People's Stories Review Panels: involving volunteers and staff in thematic analysis of stories to uncover insights and learning that statistical data can’t show.
  • Producing regular insight reports - check out the sidebar to download the latest findings

Personalisation in Action

The It's All About People team also actively gathers, shares, and promotes real examples from across Lincolnshire that show how personalised, strengths-based approaches make a difference.

These stories and insights demonstrate how putting people at the centre of care isn’t just good for individuals and families - it’s also a preventative and proactive way to ease pressure on overstretched services.

When care is built around what matters to each person, the results reach far beyond improved wellbeing. Person-centred approaches strengthen people, families, and communities, and support the long-term sustainability of our health and care system.
