Shared decision making is a process by which people are supported to understand their options and are given the opportunity to consider relevant information that might influence their choice.
Shared decision making is a key component of personalised care. It is an approach that represents the move away from a ‘doctor knows best’ style of healthcare towards a person centred approach. This represents a new relationship between people, professionals and the health and care system. It provides a positive shift in power and decision making that enables people to feel informed, have a voice, to be heard and be connected to each other and their communities
Shared decision making is a process by which people are support to:
· Understand the care, treatment and support options available and the risks, benefits and consequences of those options
· Make a decision about a preferred course of action based on evidence based, good quality information and their personal preferences.
Shared decision making should be used in all areas of healthcare, anyone who has a role in offering people treatments, investigations, therapies or interventions should have an understanding of shared decision making and use this approach in practice.
The It’s All About People personalisation team have arranged two different levels of training to provide more information about Shared Decision Making. The two courses are different in that one is an online e-learning course which provides an introduction to SDM and the other is an online virtual workshop which will be interactive and give you the opportunity to widen your knowledge of SDM and practice how to apply this in everyday life.
