When help is not welcomed

Vicky Thomson, Every One Lincolnshire

A blog by Vicky Thomson, Chief Executive of Every-One Lincolnshire, and Co-production Partner of the It’s All About People Personalisation Programme.

We all have that friend who seems impossible to help—whether it's their diet, work, or love life. You offer advice, spend hours on the phone, or take them for a walk to talk some sense into them, but nothing seems to work.

In health and care, we face similar challenges. Despite our best efforts, some individuals just won't accept our help. This can be incredibly frustrating for professionals who have years of skills, knowledge, and training but still struggle to connect with certain people.

When help is not welcomed was the focus of one of our monthly Person-Centred Learning Network (PCLN) reflective sessions back in November 2024.

The PCLN offers monthly, one-hour, online lunchtime sessions for professionals to explore different topics.

With a brief introduction from me to kickstart the conversation, I then hand over to participants to share their thoughts, ideas, and solutions.

These sessions are usually attended by up to 30 people, but for the When help is not welcomed session, 184 people registered! We ran the session again in February this year, and another 140 people registered.

What does this tell us? For me, it shows that professionals are eager to do their best and that the impact of those they can't reach is significant.

Next steps - supporting professionals

So, we are now looking at designing a more structured support offer for professionals. Want to help us develop this?

We'd love to have you on board!

Boost your personalised care knowledge and skills at Lincolnshire Person-Centred Learning Network

The PCLN sessions are facilitated by our friends at Every-One and are 'lunch-friendly', running from 12 noon to 1pm - so feel free to bring your brew and butties!

These sessions are a place where you can:

  • Refresh your learning on a personalisation model, tool, concept or approach
  • Reflect on your practice and your use of person-centred approaches
  • Share the good stuff and hear each other's experiences
  • Support each other through ideas, tips and insights

If you work in Lincolnshire and are passionate about person-centred working, contact us at hello@every-one.org.uk

All of the Person-Centred Learning Network dates are available in the Learning and Development calendar.

To sign up for a session, simply click 'register' and you'll be able to download a calendar invite with the Teams meeting joining link.

We look forward to seeing you at a future session!

Please note, sessions are not recorded due to their interactive and reflective nature.
